Polyps Q & A

What are polyps?

Polyps are growths that develop in the lining of your colon or large intestine and your rectum. These growths can range in size, appearing flat, or growing out of a stalk.

Some polyps are precancerous and can progress into colorectal cancer.

What are the symptoms of polyps?

Polyps have NO symptoms, unless they grow large and bleed.

Identifying polyps, before they grow large is the reason for routine screening colonoscopies.

How are polyps diagnosed and treated?

Colonoscopy, a minimally invasive procedure that uses a flexible tube and attached camera to evaluate the large intestine and rectum, locates, and diagnoses polyps. This same procedure can also remove polyps and reduce your risk for cancer and other health complications.

Your Eisenman & Eisenman, M.D., Advanced Gastro Consultants provider performs a colonoscopy to diagnose existing symptoms, or as a preventive screening to evaluate your gastrointestinal health. Polyps are discovered during a routine evaluation.

If your Eisenman & Eisenman, M.D., Advanced Gastro Consultants doctor identifies polyps during your colonoscopy, they remove them immediately and send the polyps to a medical laboratory to determine if they are benign or malignant. Removal of existing pre-cancerous polyps reduces your risk of cancer.

Will a polyp grow back?

Your Eisenman & Eisenman, M.D., Advanced Gastro Consultants doctor will recommend a timeline for follow-up testing as polyps can be missed behind a colon-fold during a colonoscopy or as the result of an inadequate procedure prep.

After polyp removal, the continued monitoring of your colon and rectum is typically recommended by your physician every 3-5 years after polyp removal as there is a slight chance the polyp could grow again and/or you may also develop new polyp growths.

To schedule a preventive colonoscopy to screen for polyps, call Eisenman & Eisenman, M.D., Advanced Gastro Consultants today, or request a consultation online now.
